Switzerland is at the forefront of research on the topics of “space” and “sustainability.” At Space Eye, visitors can experience this cutting-edge research firsthand.

Outreach

Space Eye plays a key role in communicating current research. We make findings on the topics of “space” and “the environment” accessible to the general public. At the same time, Space Eye serves as a hub for international networking among scientific institutions in Switzerland and around the world.

Outreach

The Space Eye is one of Switzerland’s scientific outreach centers and bridges the gap between research and society. More than 50 years ago, astronaut Buzz Aldrin unfurled the University of Bern’s solar sail on the Moon—since then, Switzerland has been involved in numerous achievements and technologies in space. Switzerland has also been a leader in climate protection research for the past decade. As an educational center, we also make an important contribution to the research of tomorrow by inspiring children and young people to pursue STEM subjects—science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Networking

In addition to this outreach role, Space Eye plays a key role in connecting national and international science and research institutions. Thanks to our proximity to various universities, we have been able to build a global research network. We also collaborate with numerous museums and exhibition spaces in Switzerland and beyond its borders.

Research

However, the Space Eye is not just about outreach and networking—research is also conducted here. The state-of-the-art telescope will be fully configured for remote operation by the end of 2025. This will allow third parties—such as students—to use it for research activities outside of the Space Eye’s visiting hours, starting in 2026. The foundation will develop a usage policy for this purpose.
